Weatherford ISD Board of Trustees Considers Proposed Changes to GPA Calculation

At their Regular Meeting in March, the Weatherford ISD Board of Trustees were presented with a recommendation from administration to consider changes to the Grade Point Average (GPA) calculation for students entering 9th grade in 2017. This recommendation was brought forward from a committee made up of parents, teachers, and administrators.

Under Board Policy EIC(Local), GPA calculations for students entering the 9th grade currently give the greatest amount of grade point credit for Advance Placement (AP) courses, followed by Pre-AP/Dual Credit, and then Regular courses.

The committee’s recommended change would give Dual Credit courses the same point value as AP courses because both provide avenues for high school students to earn college credit.

During their discussions at the March and April 2017 board meetings, the school board carefully considered the implications of this change and how it might benefit students. They also discussed several scenarios including the possibility of applying this change to current year 9th grade students.

Dr. Jeffrey Hanks, superintendent, said, “We appreciate our school board for considering the potential impact of this recommended change to Board Policy and know they will make a decision that is in the best interest of our students.”

The school board will consider this recommendation again at their next Regular Meeting to be held in May.
