Public Information Requests

Texas Government Code, Chapter 552, gives you the right to access government records; and an officer for public information and the officer’s agent may not ask why you want them. All government information is presumed to be available to the public. Certain exceptions may apply to the disclosure of the information. Governmental bodies shall promptly release requested information that is not confidential by law, either constitutional, statutory, or by judicial decision, or information for which an exception to disclosure has not been sought.

In accordance with the law, all Public Information Requests must be in writing. A written request should reasonably identify the records needed and should indicate a mailing address, phone number, or other means to contact you regarding your request. There isn't a specific form required for submitting requests, however, a form is linked above if you would like to use it. Requests may be submitted by any of the means indicated below.

Effective September 1, 2023, the recently passed House Bill 3033 alters the processes and procedures surrounding the Public Information Act, most notably how to count the days following a public information request. The new statute defines “business day” as a day other than a Saturday or Sunday, a national holiday, or a state holiday. Additionally, the new rule requires a governmental body to identify 10 days each calendar year, that the governmental body’s administrative offices are closed or operating with minimum staffing as nonbusiness days.

National Holidays:

  • The first day of January (New Year’s Day)
  • The third Monday in January (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
  • The third Monday in February (Presidents Day)
  • The last Monday in May (Memorial Day)
  • The 19th day of June (Emancipation Day)
  • The fourth day of July (4th of July)
  • The first Monday in September (Labor Day)
  • The 11th day of November (Veterans Day)
  • The fourth Thursday in November (Thanksgiving Day)

  • The 19th of January (Confederate Heroes Day)
  • The second day of March (Texas Independence Day)
  • The 21st day of April (San Jacinto Day)
  • The 27th Day of August (LBJ Day)
