Cosmetology Students Qualify for State

 

The Weatherford Skills USA Cosmetology Chapter participated in the District Competition in Waco, Texas on February 22 & 23, 2013.  Individual competitions included the following contests: leadership, skills and job exhibits.  Team competitions were Senior Quiz Bowl, Junior Quiz Bowl and Community Service Project.  The Community Service Project showcased the Haircuts for Heaters event held in November with all funds going to the Seniors of Weatherford and took 2^nd place which qualified for state competition. 

Other contests that the students competed were: Men’s Haircutting with a 3^rd place winner advancing to state, Nail Art Competition with a 2^nd place winner advancing to state, and 26 Job Exhibits with superior ratings that qualified to attend state.  The students worked months to complete their own specific Job Exhibit Project.  We had one student that made “Best of Show” in Nail Art, and Overall Best of Show for the Human Services contest. 

The state contest will be held in Corpus Christi, Texas, April 4-7.  Weatherford Cosmetology Program qualified 27 students to compete at state.  Below are a list of students that participated in the competitions and the awards received.  Notice that the Weatherford Cosmetology Project has students from Parker County schools other than from Weatherford: Aledo, Brock, Poolville and Springtown

The Weatherford FFA  in Jacksboro, Texas

 

 

 

In an extremely competitive Livestock Evaluation contest, Aidan Pool placed an outstanding 4th overall out of 211 contestants, and helped her team to a 5th place finish. In Land judging, Emiliano Vences and Tyler Miller made trips to the podium placing 7th and 8th, and the team placed 2nd overall. The Range team was led by Koby Wulfjen, who placed 5th overall. The Range team placed 2nd, as well.

 

The Freshman Pasture Plant ID contest was won by Jada Fraser, who placed 1st and Kieren Renfrow, who placed 2nd. Trevor Brunz and Sarah Thompson tied for 5th. The team placed 1st overall. Paulie Cocke was the Champion of the Milk Quality contest and helped her team to a 2nd place finish. Rounding out the day was the Poultry team, which placed 5th, overall, with Kaden Fowler getting to make a trip to the podium with a 5th place finish.

 

Weatherford FFA was also awarded the Sweepstakes Award by the Jack County Soil and Water Conservation District. Please congratulate these students for the exceptional job they have done.  

  

 

Mason Castner wins $50,000 Scholarship

 

 

Weatherford FFA is proud to announce that member, Mason Castner, has recieved a $50,000.00 college scholarship through the McKnight Leaders Scholarship Program available through Oklahoma State University. Students must be from out-of-state with preference given to students from rural Texas. Eligible students will be chosen according to leadership and extracurricular activities – especially those activities that require a significant commitment of time and effort such as Future Farmers of America. Through this program, only 50 of the best leaders from rural west Texas communities are selected annually. This program provides full out-of-state tuition and offers students an opportunity to develop essential leadership skills through exclusive coursework and seminars. Mason will be a freshman at OSU this coming fall, majoring in Agronomy. His career goal is to work for DuPont Biotechnology in the engineering, research, and product development department. Mason’s teacher, Amber Jennings, has been a positive influence and assisted Mason completing all necessary items for the scholarship.

 

 

 

HOSA Students Win at District and Advance to State

     Weatherford High School Health Occupation Students of America recently went to competition and  took first place in several categories. The following students will be going to state competition in Galveston this April!

     Heylee Sears - 2nd place district clinical nursing; Bailey Kruse - 3rd place district clinical nursing; Zalak Patel - 3rd place medical math; Sam Lee - 2nd place epidemiology; Lauren Anderson - 1st place sports medicine -MacKenzie Wright - 1st Place prepared medical speaking. 

      The HOSA students had a tremendous amount of help getting them there, said Mrs. Patricia Hoffman RN, BSN, and HST Instructor of Weatherford High School. Special thanks to Mrs. Nelson, Mr. Glenn, and to Mrs. Beasley.

Successful Scrambler is Two-for-Two

     Weatherford FFA member and Junior Class President Josh McDaniels is two-for-two in his goal of earning sponsorships for a future breeding beef heifer project by catching a calf during rodeo performances at the Ft. Worth and San Antonio Livestock Shows! In the Calf Scramble contest, determined 4-H and FFA members compete with one another to coax, catch and halter one of the calves across the winner's line. The successful scramblers receive a certificate to aid to in the purchase a breeding animal to be raised and shown at the San Antonio Livestock Show the following year.

FCCLA Regionals Results 

The Weatherford HS Chapter was recognized as one of the top five chapters with the greatest membership increase Percentage for the 5A region during 2012-2013. All students that attended participated in Leadership Enhancement Opportunities. Students earned medals in the following categories: Job interview: Megan Freymuth-gold, Kyla Keller-gold, Breana Schlosser-silver, Tyler Tierce-silver, Kyle VanDyne-silver; Etiquette: Ashton Morales-silver. Several students also competed at the meeting in STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition), which are  are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. Megan Freymuth competed in the Life Event STAR event with her plans to take a trip to Germany. Ashton Morales competed in the proficiency event, Serving Up Success, in which he demonstrated his serving skills in a restaurant simulation. Ashton placed fifth in the event. Breana Schlosser and Parker Stephens competed in the Entrepreneurship STAR event by presenting their business plan for a owning and operating a teen club. Breana and Parker placed second and are invited to compete at the state level in April.

     The Weatherford FFA Chapter was well represented by students exhibiting breeding beef heifers, breeding sheep, and market sheep at the 2013 San Antonio Livestock Show. Emilee Munchrath, a Junior FFA member and 1st grader at Curtis Elementary, was Reserve Champion with her Miniature Hereford heifer "Miss Peanut". She also exhibited a 2nd place Beefmaster Heifer. Carson Terrell, a senior at WHS, and his Beefmaster heifer "Tootsie" placed 3rd in their class. Mason Castner, also a senior at WHS, was 5th in his age division class with "Pistol Annie" an Angus heifer.  Dylan Chillcut, a 7th grade Junior FFA member, had the Grand Champion Suffolk Ewe. Brooke Chilcutt exhibited both the Reserve Champion Hampsire Ewe and Ram. Market sheep were exhibited by Ashley Kemp, Haley Farmer, and Brooke Chillcut.

 

 

Kelly Mitchell, a 2012 WHS graduate and Weatherford FFA alumni, was recently successful in passing a test to become a certified veterinary assistant. The certification was offered through her Applied Veterinary Medicine course through the Agriculture Science Department at WHS. She had to complete 500 hours of observation and activities in the classroom and a veterinary office as well as take an extensive written test. Kelly is currently an undergrad student at Tarleton State University studying pre-vet medicine.  

      The students from Weatherford did an outstanding job showing their heifers with great results competing against other students from all over Texas.  Mason Castner, a senior at WHS and Weatherford FFA officer, placed second in his Angus heifer class with a calf named "Pistol Annie". Carson Terrell, also a senior at WHS, placed eighth in his class of Beefmaster heifers with "Tootsie". Both of these calves are projects being shown as part of the Houston Livestock Show Calf Scramble. The students and their heifers will return to the Houston show in March and compete for scholarships and prizes.

       Brooke Chilcutt's results during the Open Breeding Sheep Show are fourth and fifth place Dorset Ewe Lambs, second place pair of Dorsets, third place Hampshire Ram, fourth and tenth place Hampshire Ewe lambs, third place pair of Hampshire Ewes, third and fifth place yearling Hampshire Ewes, second place Hampshire Flock, and second place pair of Hampshire sheep. Dylan placed third with his Suffolk Ewe Lamb.  

The Roo Elective Expo (formerly known as the Roo Review) was held on Tuesday, Jan. 22  This annual event is for 9th through 11th grade students and parents (8th graders are encouraged to check it out, too!). Students have the opportunity to see what courses are available as electives in grades 10-12. It is never too soon to think about what you might like to take and to ask questions about how to plan out your high school years so that you have room for all of your interests.

   Teachers from Art to Agriculture, Choir to Calculus, and Health Science to History are on hand to answer questions about their courses and counselors will also be available if you have any questions.

The WHS Cosmetology Skills USA chapter earned $1800 worth of heaters when the students cut hair in front of  Lowe's Home Improvement Store, last Saturday at their 1st Annual Haircuts for Heaters, kicking off the Weatherford Police Department's annual Heater Drive. The girls also invited new patrons to visit them for salon services with gift certificates to those not needing a haircut right away. All heaters will go to Parker County Senior Citizens in need of heat this winter. Heaters are still be collected at the Weatherford Police Department.

Career & Technical Education Students Visit Cowboys Stadium  

 Over 100 students of Mr. Lee Geffert, WHS Marketing Teacher and DECA Sponsor, recently travelled to Cowboy Stadium for a day of Touring and Career Awareness. The students were given an opportunity to go down on the field and toss a football around, tour the facility, including the locker rooms and suites, and visit with employees. They were also introduced to careers available through an organization such as the Dallas Cowboys.
