Austin Elementary Campus Teacher of the Year - Jamie Dempsey
Jamie received her degree from Tarleton State University in 2010 and is a kindergarten teacher at Austin Elementary. She writes, Growing up, I was always surrounded with discovery—questions, curiosity, experience—I didn’t want to miss anything. I was constantly learning; whether it be from an afternoon in the kitchen, a bedtime story, singing songs, or regular conversation. But when someone would ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “A teacher!” was not my first answer. But the truth is, I began teaching the moment I became an older sister.
I was also fortunate to have many wonderful teachers growing up, but it was my 5th grade teacher who picked up on my knack for helping others and recognized my leadership qualities. She allowed me to help other students, complete extra projects or errands for her, and to help out in a kindergarten classroom a few times a week. Becoming a teacher has become one of the most rewarding and eye-opening decisions I have made and I’m thankful for those who helped shape me. I start each day excited and ready to listen and learn so I may build positive and genuine relationships with each of my students. My hope as a teacher is that I inspire my students and make a lasting impression on their education and lives, just as my mentors did for me.
