New Texas Law Prohibits Student Use of Personal Devices During the School Day

During the 89th Texas Legislative Session, state lawmakers passed House Bill 1481, signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, which requires all Texas public schools to prohibit student use of personal electronic communication devices throughout the entire school day—both instructional and non-instructional time—while on school property.

Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, this means that Weatherford ISD students may not use these devices during class, transitions, lunch, or any other time during the school day.

Devices covered under the law include (but are not limited to):

  • Cell phones

  • Smartwatches and fitness trackers with texting or calling functions

  • Tablets and laptops not issued by WISD

  • Bluetooth earbuds or headphones

  • Handheld gaming devices

  • Two-way radios and pagers

  • Any personal device capable of sending or receiving messages or data

Students should store any personal devices in their backpack, purse, or locker and keep them powered off (not just on silent) for the entire school day. WISD encourages families to consider leaving personal devices at home or in a vehicle to avoid potential distractions or violations.

Students will continue to have access to district-issued technology for approved instructional purposes. Exceptions will be made for documented medical needs, special education supports, or other legal accommodations related to health and safety.

Beginning on August 13, 2025, use of these devices will be prohibited. Thank you for your support in creating a more focused, respectful learning environment for all students.

Consequences

1st Violation

3rd Violation
The device is confiscated. The parent or guardian must retrieve the device at the designated pick-up time, and the student will serve in-school suspension.

Subsequent Violations
Will result in phone confiscation and disciplinary action determined by the district.
