Life-Saving Actions Earn Student the Everyday Hero Award

Weatherford ISD’s Everyday Hero Award is a very special award that is rarely given. In fact, it’s been six years since WISD has given the Everyday Hero award, but at the October Board of Trustees meeting, the District was very honored to present the award, for the first time, to a student, Dylan Acker.

Dylan, a junior at Weatherford High School, earned the award because of his actions on the morning of April 19, 2022, that very likely saved the life of his fellow student, Dirk Green.

That morning, then-sophomore Dirk arrived at school and wasn’t feeling well. He made his way to the restrooms and as he entered, he collapsed to the ground.

What we know now is that Dirk had gone into cardiac arrest.

Dylan was the first to see that Dirk had collapsed. He immediately ran to get help and the campus Cardiac Emergency Response Team sprang into action, giving Dirk the medical attention he needed. Dirk was hospitalized, and on June 22, he received a heart transplant.

As fate would have it, October 17, 2022, the day that Dylan received his Everyday Hero Award from the WISD Board of Trustees, was also the day that Dirk returned to school for the first time since April. Dirk says that he feels as well as he has in a long time, and the two students were excited to spend the evening together and with their families.
