In 1958-1959, Raymond Schoenke attended Weatherford High School for his senior year and was a fullback for the Weatherford Kangaroos. The Kangaroos were 9-1 that season and Mr. Schoenke was a standout player for the team. He was a letterman, earned All-District Honorable Mention, was named to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s All-State team, was named All-State Honorable Mention by the Texas Sports Writer Association and was named Sporting News All-American Honorable Mention.
After high school, he accepted a scholarship to play for Southern Methodist University. At SMU, Schoenke was chosen as Sophomore Lineman of the Year in 1960 and All-Southwest conference in both his junior and senior years. He also received Academic All-American awards and All-American awards in his senior year. The University honored Schoenke by awarding the SMU "M" award - recognizing him as one of the most Distinguished Seniors to graduate in the class of 1963. Later, he was also named to SMU's 75th Anniversary All Time Football Team and received the Silver Anniversary Mustang Award from the SMU Letterman's Association, which honors the character and achievements of former athletes.
Raymond Schoenke was drafted in the eleventh round of the 1963 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, signed as a free agent with the Green Bay Packers and was later traded to the Cleveland Browns. He was then signed by the Washington Redskins where he became an integral part of the team for the next 10 years.
In 1987, he was selected for the "50th Anniversary Greatest Redskins Team,” and in 2002, was named one of the top 100 players in the history of the Redskins.
In 2004, Raymond Schoenke was honored as a recipient in the Weatherford High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame’s inaugural year.
In honor of Mr. Schoenke's success, Weatherford High School recently received a commemorative Wilson Golden Football from the National Football League. The golden footballs are being presented to 2,000 high schools across the nation that graduated a player or coach who was on an active Super Bowl roster.
The Super Bowl High School Honor Roll initiative is a part of the NFL's Super Bowl 50 celebration. Mr. Schoenke appeared with the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII.
