WHS senior named Finalist in National Achievement® Scholarship Program

The National Achievement® Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students.

Huggins, who plans on attending Harvard University in the fall and majoring in chemical engineering, earned his Finalist status by meeting high academic standards and other requirements that were set forth as a Semifinalist.

Beginning in late February, the National Achievement® Program notifies about 800 Finalists that they have been selected to receive a National Achievement® Scholarship or a Corporate-sponsored Achievement Scholarship award. About 700 National Achievement® $2,500 Scholarships will be awarded; and about 100 corporate-sponsored awards will be offered in 2015.

Besides earning recognition as a 2015 National Achievement® Scholarship Program Finalist, Huggins was also one of six WHS students who received Commended Student status or higher by the NMSC during the fall. Commended Students represent more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT®.

According to the NMSC website, the 2015 National Merit® Program and National Achievement® Scholarship Program are conducted concurrently, but they are operated and funded separately.
