When seconds count, preparation saves lives. Weatherford ISD has taken a significant step toward increasing emergency readiness across all campuses and has been officially recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) as a District of Lifesavers.
This recognition is part of the Association’s Nation of Lifesavers™ initiative, a nationwide movement to turn bystanders into lifesavers and double the survival rate from cardiac arrest outside hospitals. School districts receiving the designation must implement the Kids Heart Challenge or American Heart Challenge on every campus and establish a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP)—a coordinated, campus-specific plan ensuring AED access, CPR-trained staff, and clearly defined emergency protocols.
“We’re proud to take this step to protect our students, staff and families,” said Dr. Beau Rees, Superintendent of Weatherford ISD. “By training our teams and preparing for emergencies, we’re strengthening our community’s ability to save lives.”
The need for emergency preparedness is critical. Each year, more than 23,000 children experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital, and nearly 40% of youth cardiac arrests occur during sports or physical activity. Immediate Hands-Only CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival, yet fewer than one-third of victims receive it.
Weatherford ISD’s districtwide efforts include:

Developing and implementing a comprehensive CERP at every campus

Increasing access to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

Expanding CPR and emergency response training for staff

Providing student-centered programming focused on heart health and well-being
