Child Find

Weatherford Independent School District has special services available to eligible infants, children, and young adults identified with a disability. Federal and state laws require that school districts maintain a CHILD FIND system for identifying, locating, and evaluating individuals with suspected disabilities (birth through age 21) within its jurisdiction who are in need of special education and related services. Our CHILD FIND efforts include advertising the availability of services through media, public notices, staff training, and letters to private schools, physicians, nursing homes, group homes, and hospitals.

Birth to 3 years of age:
A referral for a suspected disability can be made by parent/guardian. If you know of someone with a suspected delay or disability, please contact Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) https://www.mhmrtarrant.org/eci/ or call 817-335-3022 to initiate the referral and evaluation process.  ECI coordinates with Weatherford ISD after evaluations are completed.

3 to 21 years of age:
A referral for a suspected disability can be made by parent/guardian. If you know of someone with a suspected delay or disability, please contact the Weatherford ISD Special Programs department. A full individual evaluation (FIE) is conducted to determine the child’s eligibility and educational need for services.

In the event, your child's evaluation under IDEA was previously denied or delayed, and you would like assistance in requesting consideration of compensatory services, the Texas Education Agency has helpful resources available online in English and Spanish

Private/Home School Students Referrals:
Referrals are accepted primarily from parents, private school administrators, or physicians for students who reside in Weatherford ISD or attend a private school located within Weatherford ISD boundaries. The referral is turned over to the Executive Director of Special Programs located at 1007 South Main Street, Weatherford, Texas.

Why should a child with suspected disabilities be referred?
Early identification and intervention can prevent frustration and failure. Special attention to teaching and learning strategies may help individuals overcome barriers to learning

Who can begin the CHILD FIND process?
A parent/guardian, doctor, child care provider, friend, relative, or private school administrator

Who may qualify for special education services?
Individuals qualify for special education services if they qualify as a child with a disability under State and Federal guidelines

For more information about the Child Find program, please contact the Weatherford ISD Special Programs Department at 817-598-2844, ext. 3102.
