School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)
The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is established to assist the District in ensuring that local community values are reflected in District health education instruction. The SHAC duties are to make recommendations to the administration and School Board in regard to human sexuality instruction, curriculum that addresses health education, physical education, nutritional services, and instruction to prevent the use of tobacco.
The majority of SHAC members must be parents of students enrolled at Weatherford ISD and who are not employed by the District.
The Council's duties include recommending:
1. The number of hours of instruction to be provided in health education;
2. Curriculum appropriate for specific grade levels designed to prevent obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type II diabetes through coordination of health education, physical education, and physical activity, nutrition services, parental involvement, and instruction to prevent the use of tobacco;
3. Appropriate grade levels and methods of instruction for human sexuality instruction; and
4. Strategies for integrating the curriculum components specified by item 2, above, with the following elements in a coordinated school health program:
a. School health services;
b. Counseling and guidance services;
c. A safe and healthy school environment; and
d. School employee wellness.
Public Statements as required by Board Policy BDF(LOCAL):
- District polices ensure that elementary and middle school students engage in the amount and level of physical activity required by Education Code 28.002(l).
- The School Health Advisory Council met three times via Zoom during the 2020-2021 school year.
- Weatherford ISD complies with Texas Education Agency's vending machine and food service guidelines for restricting student access to vending machines.
- Weatherford ISD has adopted and enforces policies that prescribe penalties for the use of e-cigarettes and tobacco products by students and others on school campuses or at school-sponsored events.
- Parents may request in writing their child's physical fitness assessment results at the end of the school year.

On October 17, 2022, WISD School Board approved a resolution under, Section 28.004(q-1) (1) of the Texas Education Code, convening the WISD’s school health advisory council (SHAC) for the purpose of making recommendations regarding curriculum materials related to prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking.
WISD SHAC will have two open meetings to review curriculum materials that comply with the instructional content requirements in law, ensure they are suitable for the subject and grade level for which the materials are intended, and are reviewed by academic experts in the subject and grade level for which the materials are intended.
WISD’s Open Meetings for Curriculum review will be held at Bowie Learning Center, 900 N. Elm St., on Monday November 14, 2022 and Wednesday November 16, 2022 from 4-5pm. If you choose to attend please attend one of these two meetings at your convenience. The curriculum will be available in a come and go format for review and evaluation.
